From when I was a very young child until age 13 or so, I fondly remember all the fun memories of getting dressed up and going trick-or-treating on Halloween Night.
In fact, many kids in my neighborhood felt it was totally acceptable to get a head start on dressing up and getting candy the night before Halloween, for those willing to hand it out!
It wasn’t until I was an adult with young children that I realized not everyone shared my view of Halloween as “just another fun holiday” for kids. So, I decided to learn more about the origin and practices of this particular day on the calendar. While I did not share the same personal conviction about dressing up and trick-or-treating, I understood and respected other Christian parents’ decision not to allow their children to participate in those activities on Halloween night.
Since the act of children participating in trick-or-treating on Halloween does not violate my personal convictions, I see the opportunity and value of using this fun day on the calendar as a great way to expose children (and adults) to the gospel of Jesus Christ. One way I have seen this done is by using a simple pumpkin-carving demonstration to show children how knowing and putting our faith in Jesus changes us from the inside out and lets His light shine through us. Another great way to share the gospel is to package up some “good” candy and hand it out along with a Halloween-themed tract that explains the Good News about Jesus in a fun way that children can easily understand.
Here’s a thought…wouldn’t it be a great opportunity to share the Good News with your friends and neighbors if you could be THAT house which offers the “extra night” of Halloween fun by inviting neighborhood families to come over and kick off the fun the night before Halloween? Perhaps you could have a family pumpkin carving contest, enjoy some hot cocoa or s’mores, and share some thoughts on how (like a pumpkin being carved) Jesus changes us from the inside out once we put our trust in Him and let His light shine in our hearts!

The Outreach Team at East White Oak is praying for you and for your Gospel witness among your neighbors this fall.
Ask the Lord, “How might you use me to share the Gospel with those in my neighborhood, apartment complex, dorm, or on a country road?” We encourage you to create environments where you can have Gospel-motivated conversations with your neighbors this fall. We will be praying for you!
As you pray and prepare for your Halloween, Thanksgiving, or your neighboring event, read, reflect, and pray through Matthew 22:36-40, Psalm 51:10-13, and John 17:11-21
Outreach Prayer
- Pray for boldness for the church to reach out to families.
- Pray for the open hearts of neighbors.
- Pray that the Gospel can be shared clearly.
- Pray that every Christ follower would make it a point to know and even befriend their literal neighbors.
- Thank God that the people who live around us are not accidents but providential appointments.
- Pray for God’s design in these neighborhoods.
- Pray for the church to live at a pace that keeps folks available to those around them.
- Pray that the church would reflect personally on life goals that we make more important than taking the Great Commandment literally.
- Pray that the church would commit to taking the next step with our immediate neighbors this year.
- Pray that people would find two or three households in their neighborhoods with whom they are already connected and could be a potential partner in this venture.
Pick up these resources at the Outreach Table!
Box Tract
While supplies last, stop by the Gospel Resource table in the hallway at church to pick up a wide variety of tracts to hand out on Halloween. Consider picking up one of these “Is There Anything Better Than Candy? Box-Tracts.” These are great Halloween and Thanksgiving tracts for you to give out more than just candy. Designed to contain children’s favorite candies, this pumpkin-shaped Box-Tract opens to reveal the gospel message. Grab a pack of 20, take it home to read it with your family. Plan a packing party to stuff each pumpkin tract, and then plan ahead for when and where to share them!
The Story Maker
These colorful cards link to a fun video that shares the Gospel in a kid-friendly way! You can share these cards along with candy or other treats on Halloween.
The Man on the Middle Cross
Share these cards with adults who stop by your home on Halloween. The code links to a video about The Man on the Middle Cross that shares the hope of the Gospel.
Booklet
Since anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults in the US every year, share this tract with adults you meet. This 10-page booklet is about our hope in a God who defeated Death and isn’t affected by change. What good news to share with a scared, angry, and confused world! What great news to share with a friend who is struggling with the crippling effects of old age, increasing bills but not paychecks, or frustration with cultural events. We can trust this God in the dark when all else fails. For the person who trusts in Jesus, everything will be okay.
