Charlie and I feel blessed to live in the neighborhood God has placed us in.

We know quite a few of our neighbors, but hadn’t become acquainted with those who have recently moved in .  A couple summers ago we and some other neighbors, planned a neighborhood gathering. It was decided that our committee would provide all the food/drink.  I delivered the hand written invitations to make it more personal and to meet the ones I hadn’t met yet.  Most responded positively and we had around 20 in attendance.  Everyone seemed to have a good time and many requested we get together again to stay in touch.   Since that summer we have had two more summer gatherings, with approximately thirty in attendance and also have had two progressive dinners around the Christmas/New Year holidays.  Three households hosted, with appetizers, main entrée, and dessert.

In addition, some of the ladies in the neighborhood have met for “ladies’ night out” occasionally, when we have enjoyed food and time together in each other’s homes.

It has been fun to meet new neighbors and to catch up with ones who have been in our neighborhood for years.  Getting to know and spend time together helps me learn the needs of my neighbors and how I can serve them and pray for them.  I have appreciated the daily emails from “Bless Every Home”, which lists five neighbors to pray for each day. Also, the encouragement of “The Art of Neighboring” has been a help to us.

Our invitation list has grown over the last two years, taking in several city blocks.  Hosting has given us many opportunities to share the love of Christ and serve our neighbors.  My prayer is that we would be lights that shine bright to our neighbors and reflect the love of Jesus to them.  I’m reminded of the verse 1 Peter 3:15 “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect”.
