Read Rylie Gerber’s Halloween encouragement below and pick up tracts to hand out with candy this year at the Gospel Resource table at church! Hand out QR code cards linking to “The Story Maker Outreach” for kids and “Man on the Middle Cross” for adults. The kids cards will be in packs of 25 and take as many adult tracts as you’ll hand out. You’ll find other children’s Halloween tracts and resources for adults like “Everything Will Be Okay: Finding Hope in the Dark?”

Halloween can be a controversial topic in the church. Whether this stems from a negative experience or from personal convictions on the subject, approaching Halloween as an outreach opportunity is a great way to redeem the holiday in your heart and for the kingdom.

My childhood experience with Halloween was always exciting and joyful, full of time with family and lots of candy. As I’ve grown older and gained more knowledge of the spiritual realm, I’ve felt a little wary of the holiday. What used to be just goofy costumes, candy, and time with cousins now feels different, as I’ve grown more aware of the subtle ways the Enemy works to sow deceit. Whether I choose to “celebrate” this holiday or not, East White Oak has helped shift my perspective to see Halloween as a unique opportunity God gives to believers.

One person in particular who has impacted my understanding of this is Carol Boerckel. Last October, Carol invited Ana and me over to join in her extravagant approach to handing out Halloween candy. We could hand out candy and tracts, sure, but Carol would ask, “Why stop there?” From hot chocolate and candy, to funny socks, flashlights, and even kitchen utensils for parents, Carol’s table had a treat for everyone who came. Every child and parent left the table not only with treats and a smile, but with a tract and a New Testament.

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Although we didn’t get to see any immediate fruit from passing out these items, we can rest assured that God’s Word is living and active. God will accomplish His purposes with the outcome, but our role is to remain faithful and obedient in proclaiming Christ in our communities.

I encourage you to pray and ask the Lord how He wants you to reach those in your neighborhood this Halloween. Faithful obedience may seem small in the moment, but there are no limits to how the Lord can use it.
