I’ve always had a deep desire in my heart to know the truth. After surrendering to Christ, I wanted to share that truth with others.
I’ve always been willing to defend the faith. But I can’t take credit for that, as I have had many Godly role models in my life. Role models who have shown, in different ways, how to speak the truth and spread the Gospel to others. For instance, my dad would talk to anyone, anywhere. To me, sharing the Gospel is simply being willing to stand out a little by offering a different opinion or perspective.
I remember a time when a coworker was talking about not wanting to get tied down to one woman. So, I offered a different perspective, noting that he is only getting older (and rounder) and may miss out on a relationship today if he does not commit. I think our Christian influence on those around us is often very basic, yet steady and consistent. I tell myself a lot (because I struggle with it) to “just be a good listener.” That is something we recently discussed in our Young Adults ABF study on apologetics: simply asking good questions. Help people to self-realize. We all learn better that way.
I have also learned to stay calm. It’s okay if you don’t know the answer (I often don’t). Again, respond with a question. A desperate, defensive answer is not a strong one. I also don’t think very critically when my emotions start to rise.
Another basic tactic I use is to keep a small stand with Gospel tracts on my desk. I keep it fresh with new seasonal tracts from church when I get a chance (thanks, Carol, for keeping it stocked!). It has only sparked a couple of shallow conversations, but that’s enough, right? How many God-centered thoughts has it created?
I’m grateful to share a few quick thoughts as your brother in Christ. If you see me around, please feel free to stop and share anything you find helpful in bringing others to Christ. As scripture tells us, it’s a team effort. Just keep planting and watering.
